Hot Chocolate Sauce

Nothing warms up a Toronto winter evening quite like hot chocolate, but for me, it also comes with a dash of South African café nostalgia.

I first learned to make this decadent chocolate sauce back in my barista days in South Africa. We used it in hot chocolates and mochas, and to this day it’s my secret to a cup that tastes café-worthy. These days, I don’t drink it as often as I’d like, but now that I’m a mom of a curious toddler, I definitely aim to make it more.

INGREDIENTS
• 2 cups of unsweetened cocoa powder
• 1 cup of sugar (adjust if you want it sweeter)
• 1 cup of hot water
• ¼ tsp cinnamon (optional)

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Add cocoa powder, and sugar to a bowl, and mix it all together
  2. Pour the hot water into the bowl with dry ingredients, then add the cinnamon
  3. Pour the hot chocolate mixture into a glass jar, wait for it to cool off, and then pop it into the fridge.
  4. The mixture will have a fudgy liquidy consistency, but once you add it to hot milk it will be wonderfully tasty.

☕ How to Make the Hot Chocolate Beverage:

1. Warm 1 cup of milk (dairy or non-dairy).

2. Stir in 2 heaping teaspoons of the chocolate sauce.

3. Add whipped cream, marshmallows, or keep it simple, its your choice!
