When I think about home – South Africa and braais (aka BBQs), the first thing that comes to mind is Boerewors.

It’s a traditional South African sausage made from coarse-ground beef, pork, or lamb with the perfect balance of meat and fat, seasoned with coriander, nutmeg, black pepper, and cloves. When it hits the grill and starts to brown, that’s when the magic begins. The smoky aroma, the sizzle, the juiciness, that’s the soul of a braai right there. The trick? Don’t let it dry out. The juice is where all that flavour lives.

Now that I live in Toronto 🇨🇦, getting Boerewors isn’t such a worry anymore. There are a few South African stores around (thankfully!) where we can grab some whenever the craving hits. During summer, we’ll light up the grill and have our version of a braai it’s nothing fancy, just the familiar taste that reminds us of home.

And when it’s too cold to braai outside (which, let’s be real, happens often in Canada 😅), hubby pan-grills the Boerewors indoors. Pair it with some caramelized onions, baked beans, and a fried egg with a perfectly runny yolk or mash potatoes and it’s pure comfort on a plate. Simple, hearty, and full of flavour, just how I like it.

Because no matter where we end up in the world, when there’s Boerewors on the grill (or pan), it always feels like home. ❤️
