My First Pepper Pot🇬🇾

A few years ago, a now good girlfriend of mine introduced me to her culture. She made a very special meal for me, Pepper Pot and can I tell you, I was completely in love.

Not just with the food, but with the culture, the people, and, of course, her kindness, the kind that instantly makes you feel at home.

Pepper Pot, as I later learned, is a beloved Guyanese dish often enjoyed around Christmas time. The taste is deep, fragrant, earthy, saucy, and tender. It’s the kind of dish that makes you slow down and savour every bite. There’s a rhythm to it too – dipping the soft bread into that dark, rich sauce, scooping it up, and realizing you can’t stop.

Growing up in South Africa, I knew about the Caribbean, but Guyana felt like a world away. Since moving to Toronto, I’ve had the privilege of meeting so many people from different backgrounds and each sharing their food, stories, and warmth.

And I’ve realized that often through food, we find connection, similarities, stories, and heart. Pepper Pot opened mine in the most beautiful way. It’s warm, kind, hearty, and simply delicious.

My husband still talks about that Pepper Pot to this day, it truly left an impression. A big thank you to my dear friend for introducing me to the essence of who she is – her culture and her heart, through food. You gave me my first taste of Pepper Pot and a forever love for Guyanese flavours. ❤️
